Our score
Greeted at the door, champagne in hand before the paperwork. The whole thing is thought through.

We were greeted at the door. Not at a desk — at the door.

There was a glass of champagne in our hands before any of the paperwork was done, which is the correct order of events and almost nobody does it.

The rooms are beautiful, and beautiful to all the senses, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. Ours had music playing as we walked in. Somebody there has decided that the first ten seconds in a room matter, and has done something about it.

The house itself is a nineteenth-century villa set back behind plane trees and clipped box. The public rooms have been done with real confidence: herringbone floors, a ring of pendant lights over the seating, windows the full height of the room, and chairs you actually want to sit in rather than photograph.

Downstairs is Coperto Restobar, and it is excellent — good enough that you could stay here and not feel you had missed anything by not going out.

This is the first hotel on this list rather than a restaurant, and it earns the place. If you are staying in Zwolle, stay here.

We pay for our own meals and we are not paid to write these. If a place is on this list it is because we would take you there ourselves. See the options. The photographs on this entry are the hotel's own.
