Our score
Delicious and generous, on the water, with a wine we would never have picked and were glad of.

Spaarne 66 sits on the water in Haarlem, and it fed us very well indeed.

It began with bread — dark, chewy, still warm — with an olive tapenade and a green herb aioli, and we ate rather more of it than we had planned to. Then oysters, because we always order the oysters.

The entrecôte went to James: pink through the middle, in a deep bowl with new potatoes, mushrooms and roasted carrot in a glossy jus. The monkfish came to the other side of the table, firm and sweet under a saffron-yellow sauce with pumpkin seeds and a smooth white purée — the kind of plate that looks rich and eats bright.

The wine was the find of the evening: a Romanian Pinot Noir, not a bottle either of us would have reached for, and better than most of what sits beside it on a list.

Delicious, generous, and on the water. We would come back.
