Grand Café at Post-Plaza
Oysters, and a glass of prosecco we had not asked for and did not pay for.
Then a four-course winter menu that was genuinely surprising — in the techniques as much as in the flavours.
Whoever has said that the Netherlands does not have a culinary identity has failed to experience the Netherlands. The Dutch cook with heart, and also with Dutch precision, and without over-the-top gimmicks. That combination is rarer than it ought to be.
It was lekker. Not perfect — which is just as well, because one of us has always wanted to die the day after the perfect meal. We came close in Den Bosch one year.
The service was impressive and impeccable. The wine list is not extensive, but it is curated well, which is the more useful of the two. The palate was craving a Gamay; the Barbera d'Alba from Piedmont was the right answer, because it stood up to the heartiness of the meal.
One of us knows food well enough to have been diagnosed with gout at eighteen, and to have subsequently given James gout. So take it as informed when we say the ambiance, the service and the food all held up.
