Our score
Not a restaurant, and not scored like one. This is the other thing we build a day around.

Makkum is best known for its pottery, and on a bright April morning the best thing in it was the bakery on the corner.

Bakker Kluft sits under a stepped gable on the main street with its black awnings out, and the words on the sign tell you exactly what they care about: desem speciaal. Sourdough.

We took two pastries and two coffees to the little table on the pavement and sat in the sun with the town going about its morning around us. Crisp sugared edges, soft sweet middles, and coffee rather better than it needed to be. We bought a glazed loaf to take with us, which did not survive the drive.

This is not a restaurant and we are not scoring it like one. It is the other thing we build a day around: ten minutes, a few euros, a chair in the sun, and a town you would otherwise have driven straight through. Friesland is full of these if you know where to stop. This is one we would stop at again.

We pay for our own meals and we are not paid to write these. If a place is on this list it is because we would take you there ourselves. See the options.
